Everyone dishes out PR tips on the daily (hence PR Daily), but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to reiterate some I’ve learned while being the new PR intern here at Provocateur Media. I recently read PR Daily’s “6 PR Lessons from Santa Claus” by Joe Vasquez and saw it quite fitting with Christmas finally here!

1. “Make a list, and check it twice”
• As the PR intern, I have a lot of list-building tasks. The first and most important lesson I’ve learned is to not send haphazard pitches to an editor or blogger. Reading up on the editor’s title, background, and instructions help me send things out specifically and efficiently.
2. “Plan, prepare, and deliver”
• In order to avert any crises or overlapping events, gathering up editorial calendars is a must! And the fun doesn’t stop there! We organize the ones we receive into one master calendar and into little mini ones based on the subject (since we’re a lifestyle PR firm). All this organization helps us get our act together and deliver the results expected (and maybe then some).
3. “Share everything”
• Branding our company is sharing our company. I try to help achieve this by maintaining a presence on all of our social media accounts. We’re still working our way up but if you want to see an already successful “shared” company, Kate Spade (although a fashion-related) does a great job at “sharing” their brand.
4. “Ho! Ho! Ho!”
• Giving opinions while still being honest and true to our company’s identity is an important value to maintain. We can’t go around criticizing our client’s logos and branding identity if it’s fitting to who they really are, but we can make suggestions that are helpful. I call it, constructive criticism! Just kidding. The whole world calls it that.
5. “Big rep”
• Reputation is a big one. It takes a lot of time, patience, money, and, as my boss has told me, like, to not only fulfill client’s expectations, but to also build their reputations. It is hard to manage other’s expectations, let alone your own, but it’s do-able as long as you inform and reassure the client of the entire process.
6. “Show you care”
• The community is everything nowadays and hence, connecting clients to it will not only boost their own self-esteem, but the self-esteem of the entire community as well. I haven’t been with our company long enough but I do know that I would like us and our clients to contribute in some way to the Bay Area community that gives back to us, be it through a charity fashion show, benefit wine tasting party, or what-have-you.
